Ragini makes special effort for mom

Though Govinda couldn't make it for sister Kamini Khanna's act on stage that was dedicated to her mother the late Nirmala Devi, the rest of the family was present in full force to cheer and clap for her.

Krishna Abhishek came in a little late wearing a sheepish smile and apologising for the delay. He explained that he was busy shooting for a reality show and couldn't wrap up the shoot sooner. Ragini Khanna, however, made sure that she wrapped her work in time to be there for mommy dearest. She even hosted the event. Ragini was seen bonding with cousins Aarti Singh and Vinay Anand too. Looks like being in the showbiz has become a habit for this family. Much sibling revelry was seen between these cousins. Ragini's co-stars Mahesh Thakur, Shyam Mashalkar and Suraj Thapar came in to lend support. Other guests present for the do included Ghulam Mustafa Khan, Maya Govind, Shoma Ghosh, Parveen Sultana, Jaspinder Narula, Sitara Devi and Kirti Kumar.

Ennamo Yedho from Ko tops the Chart this week

This weekend has some new additions to the chart with an excellent track from Ko replacing Yaathe Yaathe from Aadukalam. In fact couple of other songs from the same album has got its position with Sada Sada from Kaavalan getting above No.5 Position. Engeyum Kadhal has slightly got down the charts as the airing has been reduced in FM Stations.

1. Ennamo Yedho (Ko): This song was ringing into our senses from the time its teasers were aired on all satellite channels and theatres. Sony BMG found a smart way to publicize the track by airing it in all FM Stations much prior to audio launch. Aalaap Raju mesmerized us with the title song Engeyum Kadhal from Harris Jayarajs recent album with the same title. Prashanthini has hummed for very portions while Sricharan and Emcee Jesz have excelled with their rap lines. Karkys lyrical lines are the biggest plus.

2. Oththa Sollala (Aadukalam): Wondering how could this song overshadow the No.1 song of many weeks? Its all because of visuals that were conceptualized by cinematographer, filmmaker and choreographer. One could sense the fever that was flooding in theatres with this song. Vel Murugans voice stands out as one of the major highlights of this track.

3. Yaathe Yaathe (Aadukalam):
Lot of expectations much prior to the release as much visuals werent aired during promotional campaigns. Precisely, it was anticipated that there would be some fantastic dance steps from Dhanush, which literally turned out to be a mere disappointment. Dhanush hardly shakes his leg for this number. But as on song, G.V. Prakashs composition is fantastic.

4. Yaradhu (Kaavalan):
After a very long time, we get to hear a mellifluous romantic number in Vijays movie. This is a situational s! ong that occurs at a crucial point of time in the film. There are no special dances by Vijay, but his goofy acts made it an appealing number. Thanks to Karthik for his splendiferous vocalism. The young singer always shines out with brilliant flashes when it comes down to romantic songs.

5. Ven Paniyae (Ko): Call it a slow poison. The song has such magnetizing features that let us breathe through the melody of love. Harris Jayaraj has shown keen interest over the vocalisms and chorus parts. The beats are mild and so are the instrumentals. The playback singers Sriram Parthasarathy and Bombay Jayashree prove to be the best options and none could have done a better job than this combination.

6. Neela Vaanam (Manmadhan Ambu): The lyrical lines and rendition by Kamal Haasan received good reception. But the visuals of reverse narration are inspired from famous English album Cold Play.

7. Engeyum Kadhal (Engeyum Kadhal): Aalaap Raju swings up with his mesmerizing voice. Hes sure to make it bigger in music industry as he possesses such an unique quality. The song is a breezy number to be heard while drenching your feet across shores.

8. Sada Sada (Kaavalan): Again, its Vijay-Karthik combination from the same album of Kaavalan. Unlike the other number, this is a sweet-fast paced romantic solo. The dance sequences and the same goofy mannerisms of Vijay have conquered the interests of all centres. The song reminiscences of yesteryear melodies as it carries such factors.

9. Enge En Idhayam (Kanden):
First-timer Vijay Ebenezer makes an impressive start as almost all the song in this album are worthy of appreciations. Enge En Idhayam is the cherry-pick of this album as the music is so jazzy with good melody. Dr. Burns rap lines are additional attractions while Krish and Prashanthini make the melodic feel penned by lyricist Thamarai so intensely.

10. Evandi Unna Pethan (Vaanam):
The song re! ached th e heights at overnight and suddenly got down the charts due to so many releases. However, it is sure to reach its places by the time of release as Silambarasans dance and colorful visuals by Nirav Shah should have best results.

Kanteerava - Movie Review

Director Thushar Ranganath started his career with the movie Gulama in 2009. Aftre two years gap, he is back with his second venture Kanteerava, which stars black cobra Vijay in the lead. It is a remake of Jr NTR's hit Telugu movie Simghadri and the director has done nothing but clear copycat except a few changes here and there to suit the taste of local audience.

Kanteerava is an action thriller with triangular love story as its backdrop. Duniya Vijay's acting is the main attraction of the film. Chakri's music, Risheeka Singh's glamour, Mandya Ramesh and Sadhu Kokila's comedy, punch dialogues, costumes, fights and dance sequences are the other highlights of the film.

The movie has a good storyline that is all about an angry young man eliminating the rowdy elements in his neighbouring state and becoming the saviour of people of that state. The narration of the film is good. The first if the is bit slow pace, but the second half, which has all the commercial elements like comedy, love, emotion and fights, is very interesting. In the climax, there are thought provoking dialogues exchanged between hero and villain.

Kanti alias Kanteerava (Vijay) is an orphan. He is impressed by Ramachandrapa (Srinivasamurthy), the village leader's principle that he is ready to die himself or kill anyone for the welfare of ten people. Once Kanti saves his life by risking his own life. Later, he is grown up by the leader, whose granddaughter Kasthuri (Rishika Singh) falls in love with him. But, he is in love with a girl called Indra (Shuba Punja), whom he is secretly looking after. After gaining her consciousness, Indhu tries to kill him. Why tries to kill him and whom he will marry will form the climax of the film.

As usual, Vijay looks suprb in his role as angry young man Kanteerava. He wins the heart of audience in action, comedy and sentiment sequences. Risheeka's glam show is a feast for pranksters. Shubha Poonja has done justice to her role. Mandya Ramesh and Sadhu Kokil! a's come dy is a highlight of the film. Srinivasamurthy, Mukesh Rishi, Rahul Dev, Bhanuchander and Sankesh Kashi are good in their respective roles.

Chakri has composed music for five songs of the film and songs 'Cheluve Cheluve...' and 'Singamalai...' are good. Dasari Srinivas' camera work is good. Editing work, costumes and locations are also commending. Overall, it is a perfect commercial entertainer and atleast Vijay fans should not miss it.

Producer: Ramu

Director: Thushar Ranganath

Cast: Vijay, Shuba Punja, Rishika Singh, Srinivasamurthy, Mandya Ramesh, Mukesh Rishi, Rahul Dev, Bhanuchander, GV, Yamuna, Rekha, Sankesh Kashi, Vijay Kashi

Music: Chakri

Neelam takes a dig at Sara and Ali

Actress turned entrepreneur Neelam takes a dig at the couple who got married on TV show Bigg Boss.

It's celebration time for Neelam Kothari, who is getting ready to tie the knot with her boyfriend Samir Soni. Though it is a big day for the actress, she wants to keep it small and simple.

Ever since she declared the news of her getting married, the actress has been asked questions from fans about why she didn't plan to get married on Bigg Boss, where Samir was a contestant. The show hosted a wedding for TV stars Sara Khan and Ali but unimpressed by the gimmick, Neelam replied, "No chance. We are not the ones for drama."

Apparently Sara and Ali's wedding on BB house was a clear strategy to get more TRPs. The couple parted ways as soon as Sara was evicted from the show and Neelam is not game for such dramebaazi.

The bride to be informs that the preparations are on in full swing and she plans to wear a traditional outfit for her wedding. Speaking about it she said, "Planning a wedding is not a joke! Even though it's small and simple, I am truly enjoying every moment of it."

We wish a happy married life to Neelam and Samir.

Natalie Portmans No Strings Attached Goes Up Against Green Hornet at the Box Office

Natalie Portman goes up against herself this weekend when Paramount opens Ivan Reitmans R-rated romantic romp No Strings Attached in 3,018 theaters at the domestic box office.

Neither Paramount nor Fox Searchlight could have predicted that Portman starrer Black Swan would still be going strong when No Strings Attached also starring Ashton Kutcher hit theaters. Last weekend, Portman won the Golden Globe for best actress in a drama for Searchlights Swan, which could give that movie a bump.

No Strings Attached, which explores whether casual sex can actually stay casual, is the only new film opening nationwide this weekend. Tracking is great among younger women and older female teens.

Paramount expects the film to open in the mid- to high teens, in line with other R-rated romantic comedies.

Newmarket is taking a more limited approach with Peter Weirs The Way Back, which opens in 650 theaters. The World War II drama is the Australian filmmakers first film in almost a decade.

The Weinstein Co. launches John Wells The Company Men in 106 theaters, exactly one year after the film made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Originally, the Weinstein Co. was going to open Company Men in time for awards consideration, but it pushed back the release.

Overall, its going to be another down weekend at the domestic box office. Once a movie graveyard, January turned in strong performances the past several years, and especially last year with Avatar. January 2011 is a return to less prosperous times.

The one exception is awards fare like Black Swan and the Weinstein Co.s The Kings Speech, both of which have overperformed. Swans cume through Wednesday was $76.6 million, while Kings Speech stood at $48.6 million. Like Sw! an, King s Speech scored a top Globe acting award (for Colin Firth).

No Strings Attached was produced for a modest $25 million, so Paramount doesnt need a huge opening weekend. From a script by Elizabeth Meriwether, the film tells the story of lifelong friends who end up becoming casual sex buddies.

The big question is whether Sony holdover The Green Hornet can beat No Strings Attached in its second weekend. Last weekend, Hornet debuted to $33.5 million for the three-day weekend and $40 million for the four-day holiday frame.

Weirs Way Back is his first movie since Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World in 2003. Way Back stars Jim Sturgess, Colin Farrell and Ed Harris as prisoners of war who escape a gulag in Siberia.

Company Men, about corporate downsizing, is even more star-packed. The cast is led by Ben Affleck, Chris Cooper, Kevin Costner and Tommy Lee Jones. Company Men marks Wells feature directorial debut.

Dhobi Ghat gets excellent reviews

The very presence of Aamir Khan carries lots of weight. His presence surely makes a big difference irrespective of the budget of a film but it doesnt guarantee good collection. But Aamir keeps coming up with good films, thus giving good reason for film lovers to watch out for his films. And the good news is that his latest film Dhobi Ghat too has got good reviews from all quarters.

Popular film critic Taran Adarsh applauds the film for its content. Dhobi Ghat is an imposing and vibrant cinematic portrait, appending itself to the new wave of independent Indian cinema which I am extremely pleased to applaud. It is art house cinema with European sensibilities, embellished with a well thought out story that's devoid of cliches. This ingenious motion picture caters more to the intelligentsia and connoisseurs of world cinema and will therefore garner more patronage and benefaction from the metropolitan audience in India chiefly and global spectators predominantly, he wrote.

Film critic Nikhat Kazmi describes Dhobi Ghat as a compelling picture of urban angst that has become the hallmark of big city life. She is all praise for debutante director for making a film that is heavily imbued with mood and soul. A lyrical ode to the modern malady - metro-eccentricity - Dhobi Ghat is intelligent and artistic cinema, she wrote in her review.

WATCH DHOBI GHAT TRAILER

Kaveree Bamzai is of the opinion that Dhobi Ghat is like fresh air crowded Mumbai. Some movies knock you out with a punch, others gently lay you down, soothe your fevered brow and lull you into a dream. Movies about Mumbai tend to do the former. But Kiran Rao's deeply personal Dhobi Ghat takes you by the hand, leads you to its doorstep and then leaves you to gawk, with pleasure, she wrote, adding, Rao's film is like fresh air, as elusive in Mumbai's leaky chawls as in its smoky drawing rooms.

Well, going by the excellent reviews that film critics have showered, it looks li! ke Dhobi Ghat will rock at the box office.
It is all about four people from very different backgrounds, whose worlds intersect and leave them forever altered. As they find themselves drawn into compelling relationships, the city finds its way into the crevices of their lives, separating them even as it brings them closer. It is directed by Kiran Rao and features Prateik Babbar, Aamir Khan and Monica Dogra in the lead roles.

Watch out for this movie!

Aamir addresses concern of Dhobi Mahasangh

Today no film releases without any stress. Actor Aamir Khan too faced a similar problem three days before the release of his wife Kiran Rao's directorial debut Dhobi Ghat. The Akhil Bharatiya Dhobi Samaj objected to the title of the film and wanted Aamirto change it.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday afternoon, the actor said, " Amit Khatri, Krishna Kumar Kanojia and other members of the Dhobi Mahasangh came to me and expressed their apprehensions about representations of the dhobi community in the film and asked us to change the title of the film."

Aamir immediately agreed to do the same but also appraised them about the problems that he would've to face to change the title. Aamir explained to them that the movie is about a beautiful and heritage place, which is Dhobi Ghat, an important part in Mumbai and not about any particular community. He showed the movie to the members of the association and asked them to be the judge themselves and decide if the movie hurts their sentiments in anyway.

The members after watching the film were content and satisfied about their concerns that they had, and were of the notion that nothing in the film was disrespectful towards the community. In fact they felt that Prateik had performed the role of a Dhobi extremely well without stereotyping it in anyway.

Aamir said, "Since childhood my mother has taught me never to hurt anyone's feelings. So when I was approached by the members of the association I felt that there was something that was hurting them. It was very important to me that I hear them out and make sure that their concerns are addressed and we do whatever is in our hands to ease them."

Katrina in a double role

Actress Katrina Kaif, who is being given the credit for pulling off Farah Khan's 'Tees Maar Khan' to whatever degree the film worked and is currently seen as being as solid as a hero at the box office, could be seen in a double role soon. A trade guru says that it is an age-old Bollywood tradition. When Hema Malini was at her peak Ramesh Sippy made 'Seeta Aur Geeta' with her. Likewise when Sridevi was riding a crest of popularity, Pankuj Parasher made 'Chaalbaaz' with her. Now, since Kat is the golden girl of Bollywood, a film corporation that has bought the rights for 'Seeta Aur Geeta' wants to make a new version of this film with Katrina.
Kat has not commented on the subject. But sources tell that the plan to make a film that has Katrina in a double role is definitely on. There is speculation that Dibakar Banerjee may be asked to direct it. A couple of other high-profile director names are also being floated. However, nothing is final yet. They also need two leading men for the film. At best, this project can be described as a work-in-progress.

AK Hangal's ill and broke

For decades he made cinephiles weep with him, at him as he battled bereavement, exploitation and misery on screen. At 95, Avtar Kishan Hangal, aka A K Hangal, remembered for some of the most heart-rending roles in Hindi cinema, battles a fading memory, illness and acute penury.

Saraswati Mansion in Santacruz (East), where the veteran actor lives with his 74-year-old son, Vijay, looks run down, and in crying need for repairs. But neither Hangal, who is confined to the bed, or his son, who suffers from a debilitating back problem, are in any position to bring about cosmetic changes to their modest dwelling, struggling as they are to pay for medication.

A friend of the Hangal family told Mumbai Mirror, "Hangal saab was an active participant in the Indian freedom struggle and he acted in nearly 200 films. It is sad to see him reduced to such a state where he has to depend on benefactors for survival."

Hangal and his son have depleted their savings. Vijay was a Bollywood photographer. "But I am 74 years old now and can't be running around clicking pictures on the field. Besides, there is the back problem," he tells us.

Despite his contribution to the film industry, the city has not been kind to the actor. In 1993 Hangal had applied for a visa to visit his birthplace, Sialkot, in Pakistan. The embassy invited him to Pakistan Day celebrations which he attended. Unfortunately Bal Thackeray took offence and Hangal was declared a traitor, a call to boycott his films was made and his scenes deleted from films, effigies burnt and posters ripped.

The unsparing political backlash continued until a year later a meeting with Bal Thackeray clarified that he had not asked for a boycott and Hangal started getting bit roles in films again. "Well, my dad has not acted in any films for the last eight years," says Vijay, adding, "Things have been difficult. You see, actors in those days were not paid as much as they are paid now. So, it was never going to be that! easy."

Admitting to their financial duress, Vijay told Mumbai Mirror, "Medicines are very expensive. And this is a recurring expense. In 2009, my father was hospitalised for a month, but after that, he has been treated at home."

However, Hangal, who stole hearts with his acts in Sholay and Shaukeen, is unaware of his pitiable state. "He remembers everything about the past, but keeps forgetting things about the present," added Vijay.

While help has not come forth from expected quarters, there have been pleasant surprises, "Vipul Shah gave us Rs 50,000. That was great because my dad has never worked with him. Then, Asha Parekhji helped us. Then we are meeting Gurudas Kamat (former president of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee) on Sunday and we hope he will be able to help us. A couple of days ago, Ameya Khopkar (president of Maharashtra Navnirman Chitrapat Kamgar Sena) gave us Rs 51,000. We manage," said Vijay, putting up a brave front.

Said benefactor Khopkar, "Hangal saab is a great man. We love him very much. We shall look after him to the best of our abilities."

Thankfully, Hangal and his son don't have to worry much about rent. "Our society has run into a dispute and we have a receiver from court who collects just Rs 120 from us every month," says Vijay, adding, "But then, we have to shell out about Rs 500 every month for the maintenance."

Judge blocks release of JWowws nude pics

New York, (ANI): A judge has blocked Jenni JWoww Farleys ex-boyfriend from distributing nude pictures of the reality TV star. According to TMZ.com, the judge has ruled that Tom Lippolis has no legal right to distribute naked images of the Jersey Shore star, reports the New York Post.

The judge said that the photos in question were taken without permission and while Farley was under the effects of pre-surgical and post-surgical anestesia, when the photos were taken last February. Lippolis held that the photos would not harm Farleys reputation because she has stated in the past that she wanted to pose for Playboy and that she was "always a willing participant and always gave consent."

The photos depict the bombshell star before she had liposuction and a second breast augmentation. The case is set for arbitration, where a final ruling will be made concerning the future of the photos.

Martin, Emilio to co-write father-son memoir

Actor Martin Sheen and his son Emilio Estevez have teamed-up to write a memoir called Along the Way, to be published next year.

Free Press, part of Simon and Schuster, said it would "celebrate [the] profound bond" between the two actors.

"I'm so happy to be working on this unique project with my father. We're both fathers of sons... neighbours and activists," the BBC quoted Estevez as saying.

The pair recently collaborated on film 'The Way', which Estevez directed and Sheen appeared in as Estevez's father.

In the film, Sheen plays a man who walks a thousand-year-old pilgrimage path in Spain in his late son's honour.

"We hope that our story will communicate an essential message for our times," Estevez said.

"Film is an illusion. Fame is ephemeral. Faith and family are what endure," he added.

The book will "give candid insights into the actors'' lives and relationship [and] tell of their individual search for faith," according to Free Press.

Saif selling off his penthouse apartment

Saif Ali Khan is a true-blue nawaab. A few years ago, he bought a spacious penthouse apartment in Bandra and spent over a crore doing it up. But now, he wants to sell the apartment before even moving in! The reason? He's recently noticed that the residents of the building hang their clothes to dry in their balconies!

Saif bought the penthouse in 14-storey building Hicons Enclave (previously called La View) on 14th Road in Khar a few years ago. He then roped in a top notch interior designer to do it up and took personal interest in every aspect of designing. But now he wants to offload the place.

Saif Ali Khan recently visited the place with girlfriend Kareena Kapoor to take stock and he got the shock of his life. Says an insider, "When he bought the place the building was new there were no other buildings around. But a year later, that had changed. There are now several under-construction buildings around it. One of the plus points for him was the fact that it was the tallest building in the neighbourhood but it is no longer the case now. Also, when he'd started doing up his house, none of the residents had moved in.

Now, the occupants of the other apartments were proudly displaying their washed laundry in window sills and balcony grills, which further put off the Chote Nawab. He was appalled and has decided to sell the place. That's Saif for you every inch the nawab who is willing to give up money for his littlest whims and fancies!"

It is learnt that the actor paid Rs. 14.9 crore (approx) and now wants sell the 10000 sq feet apartment for about Rs.25 crore. The good news is that he has at least made a profit. SAK remained unavailable for comment.

I dont feel weird about playing mother on screen Madhuri Dixit

Contrary to rumours, Madhuri Dixit has no hang-ups about playing mother on screen. The Bollywood beauty, who is reported to have refused to play Sonam Kapoors mom in a movie, says she is ready to essay any role as long as the script fascinates her.I dont feel weird about playing a mother on screen. I am a mother after all! Madhuri told IANS, breaking into her trademark laugh and flashing that famous smile. So does that mean she is ready to play mother to Sonam in Anil Kapoors Indian version of Freaky Friday?I still have to talk to Anilji. He isnt available as he is out of town. When he comes back, we will meet and talk about it, said the mother of two sons Arin, 7, and Raayan, 5.The 43-year-old, who is here to judge Sony TVs dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 4, has been meeting producers and flipping through scripts ever since she has come but is yet to lock a deal.In a grey and cream suit, without a trace of make-up or even kohl, the actress looked as graceful as ever as she spoke about her movie plans in India.See, the film should also fascinate me! What matters is the subject and what they are trying to say through the filmits not just whether I have to play a mother or a child or whatever. That doesnt matter. But what is the film about, what kind of role is it and what all have I to do in the film are very important considerations, she said.Madhuri became a name to reckon with after her performance in superhits like Tezaab, Ram Lakhan, Tridev, Dil, Saajan, Khalnayak, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Dil To Pagal Hai and Devdas.Breaking a million hearts by tying the knot with US-based doctor Shriram Nene in 1999, Madhuri settled in Denver, Colorado, and did only a select few films. Her last Bollywood outing Aaja Nachle failed to create ripples at the box office, but she is ready to take on new challenges and is open to working with the new wave of directors now.I am looking forward to working with good dir! ectors. I dont mind working with someone new or even someone I have already worked with. I just think it should be something new on screen and it should show me in a new light, said Madhuri, who has liked the works of Vishal Bharadwaj and Imtiaz Ali.She is also ready to make a departure from her image for the sake of interesting roles. The right kind of script is very important. I want to do a fun and entertaining movie which my fans would like to watch. So I am waiting for those kind of scripts. I am ready for an image change if I think a film is going to be nice and entertaining and its going to say something different.I am an actress and I like to do different things. I dont mind doing grey shades either I did it in Pukar; it was quite grey! So, I have no qualms about doing anything, but it should be for a good role and a good script.

Satish: On the right note

Music composer Satish Chakravarthy is one happy man. After all, Leelai, with which he debuted in Kollywood, is gearing up to hit the screen by next month.

"The album of Leelai was launched a year ago, but the movie was postponed due to some issues. We are currently working on a song trailer for the film, which will tentatively release by the second week of February. I'm sure the trailer will help in whatever little way to promote the film," he says.

Satish is all praise for its director, Andrew Vasanth Louis, and producer for giving him a free hand while working on the album. "Despite being a debutant, they gave me complete freedom," he smiles.

Satish insists that the album of the film will play an important role in making the movie a success. "Leelai is a romantic comedy and the songs and the BGM are integral to the script. The number, Oru Kili..., which has lyrics by Vaali, has been wonderfully sung by Shreya Goshal and picturised in a creative way. This song will definitely be applauded by the audience," he signs off confidently.

The bride is going to wear a red benarasi with traditional make-up for the wedding day. She will put on a red and gold dhakai jamdani for the reception, while Jack will go for a Sherwani.

We wish the couple a very happy married life in advance!
